I always knew my husband was lucky, but somehow, I did not realize just how lucky he is. He often purchased scratch lottery tickets, and more often than not, won. I, on the other hand, could buy a hundred tickets and have a hundred losers. It was not often I felt the urge to gamble in any fashion, knowing I had my major win when I met my husband. We had met in 2003 and married shortly after. In 2007, we finally managed to find time for a vacation. Vacation was a trip to Utah from New Mexico to visit his sister and her family.
We chose to drive the nearly six hundred miles as I had never been through most of the area. Anyone who has taken a long road trip knows that once in a while, you need to get out of the vehicle and stretch. We left early in the morning, enjoying the beautiful country as we made our way past Albuquerque, Bernalillo and Farmington. Shiprock was a bit disappointing as there was just enough pollution in the air to dull the magnificent mountain display and the blue sky was a sickly green from the pollution of the nearby generating plant.
We turned north into Colorado and the air quickly cleared. Here the land was again raw and beautiful in its own way. We had been in the pickup for nearly five hours and both of us were looking for some exercise. A sign said there was a casino just up the road. Great. Most casinos offered clean bathrooms, air conditioning, and a good, safe place to stretch our legs. We pulled in and crawled out of the truck. Knowing we had another six hours to drive, I was not looking forward to getting back in quickly.
Inside, the restrooms were delightfully clean and well stocked. The air conditioners were working overtime to fight off the late May heat and it was very conducive to relaxing just a bit. Knowing my luck, I was not interested in playing the slots, but I thought it would be nice to take a quick tour and see the sights. In the lobby there was some beautiful artwork. It was not something I was interested in taking home, but it was nice to study it for a bit.
As we walked through the main floor, my husband asked, "Do you see any dollar machines?" I enjoyed playing slots on rare occasions, but I knew I was going to leave any money I put in, so I had tended to look for nickel and quarter machines and had never played dollar machines before. It took a few minutes of wandering around, but we finally found the type of machine he was looking for. He told me to sit down at one of the machines and proceeded to pull a $20 from his wallet.
I was bemused as I knew whatever he put in, I would lose rather rapidly, but at least I was out of the truck for a little bit. I watched as he put the $20 into the proper slot and the machine whirled and lighted recording the credits now available. My husband said, "Okay, all you have to do is hit this 'Bet Max' button." He did just that while explaining his theory on why you should always bet the maximum amount and never anything else.
When he hit the button, which placed a $3 bet, and the dials started spinning. He was reaching for a second $20 for him to play on the machine next to me as the first dial stopped. He pulled out his $20 and the second dialed stopped, identical to the first one. I held my breath. Surely, even he was not that lucky. The third and final dial spun for a few moments more, both of our eyes glued to it. It finally slowed and stopped, identical to the first two.
Bells started whistling, lights blinking off and on. I laughed, slotoff.com fully unable to believe what my eyes were seeing. The credits started accumulating. I glanced to the top of the machine, trying to figure out just where it would stop. On one spin, my husband had won $300. "Time to cash out." He said. He hit the cash out button and $1 credit coins started spilling out into the coin holder. They kept coming and kept coming.
I grabbed a coin bucket from the empty chair beside me and started scooping them into the cup as they began to spill over.
